Scientist/Senior Scientist, Medicinal Chemistry

  • We are seeking multiple talented and highly motivated chemists with pharmaceutical industrial experience to join our drug discovery team.
  • The successful candidate will contribute to all phases of the drug discovery, including hit identification, hit to lead, lead optimization and candidate nomination.
  • As a member of a dynamic multi-disciplinary team, the candidate will work closely with other scientists internally or externally to support our drug discovery efforts and identify new chemical entities into clinical stage.
  • This is a full-time position in the company’s San Diego headquarters.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Design and optimize novel bioactive chemical entities in alignment with project goals based on the SAR analysis and by applying medicinal chemistry principles and tools.
  • Employ sound judgment in the evaluation and decision making on HTS hits and subsequent hit optimization follow-up.
  • Plan and execute the synthesis, purification and characterization of small molecules; develop scalable routes of preclinical drug-candidates.
  • Ability to overcome challenging synthetic problems with alternative and practical synthetic strategies.
  • Advance drug discovery programs by collaboratively interacting with other cross-functions to understand and optimize DMPK and in vitro and in vivo pharmacological properties.
  • Effectively manage and mentor junior medicinal chemistry colleagues and external CRO chemists.
  • Work closely with biologists to evaluate new programs and provide input on chemical tractability and analysis of literature leads.
  • Organize and prioritize workload to meet timelines and exhibit flexibility and adaptability within a rapidly changing and fast-paced environment.
  • Contribute to chemistry program strategy and serve as chemistry project lead for drug discovery programs.
  • Communicate effectively both in oral and written form and deliver internal and external presentations in a timely manner.
  • Perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment and duty.
  • Contribute to the writing of patents, scientific presentations, and publications.


  • Ph.D. in synthetic organic/medicinal chemistry with 3+ years of pharmaceutical industrial experience in small molecule drug discovery and development.
  • Demonstrated expertise in multi-step synthesis and strong knowledge of techniques related to purification and characterization of organic compounds (NMR, MS, HPLC, etc).
  • Demonstrated a high level of creativity and productivity with strong synthetic problem-solving skills; have clear command of organic synthesis and familiar with the current literature.
  • Good understanding of physicochemical, ADME, biochemical, pharmacology principles and effectively applying these in the design of novel small molecule drugs.
  • Experience in oncology/neurodegenerative research is a plus.
  • Proven track record in medicinal chemistry as evidenced by successful advancement of drug discovery projects and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Good understanding with structure-based drug design concept and experience using computational chemistry and data visualization software is a plus.
  • Able to work independently and apply experience and knowledge to solve difficult synthetic challenges and provide useful guidance to other chemists on the project team.
  • Experience in mentoring and managing both internal junior chemists and external chemistry resources is a plus.
  • Collaborate and communicate across a dynamic multi-disciplinary scientific team to successfully progress scientific goals.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including ability to present the data, issues and accomplishments of the team.
